What Is HIFU Treatment?

HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. It is a non-surgical treatment commonly used for skin tightening and facial lifting support in selected areas of the face and neck.

This treatment has become increasingly popular in Singapore for patients who want a non-surgical approach to facial rejuvenation without incisions or injections.

HIFU may be considered for:

  • Skin tightening and lifting support
  • Collagen stimulation
  • Selected lower-face and jawline contour concerns
  • Double chin concerns

The treatment uses focused ultrasound energy to target selected layers beneath the skin while leaving the skin surface intact.

Downtime is usually limited, and results are typically assessed progressively over time depending on the treatment area, skin laxity, and individual response.

Quick Facts

How Does HIFU Treatment Work?

As we age, collagen production gradually declines, which can contribute to skin laxity, fine lines, and a less defined facial contour. HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to target selected layers beneath the skin while leaving the skin surface intact.

HIFU is commonly considered for:

  • Skin laxity and sagging
  • Selected fine lines and wrinkles
  • Jawline and lower-face definition
  • Double chin concerns
  • Early signs of facial ageing

The treatment is designed to deliver focused energy at different depths beneath the skin. This treatment is commonly used to support collagen stimulation and skin-tightening effects in selected treatment areas.

Areas such as the forehead, brow area, cheeks, jawline, and under-chin region may be treated, depending on the treatment plan. The exact response depends on the treatment area, degree of skin laxity, and individual suitability.

HIFU Treatment Benefits

  • Non-surgical skin tightening and lifting support
  • Commonly used to support collagen stimulation
  • Targets selected layers beneath the skin without incisions or injections
  • May help improve lower-face contours and mid-face support in selected cases
  • Can be used for facial and body treatment areas, depending on the treatment plan

HIFU vs Ultherapy

HIFU and Ultherapy are often compared because both are commonly used for non-surgical skin tightening and lifting support.

Ultherapy is generally distinguished by the use of real-time imaging, while HIFU platforms may vary depending on the machine and treatment protocol.

Both may be considered for facial skin laxity, lower-face support, and selected lifting concerns. The more suitable option depends on skin condition, treatment goals, comfort preference, and budget.

Additional Information

How Is HIFU Priced?

HIFU is a non-surgical treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to target selected layers beneath the skin. Pricing can vary because different machine platforms, treatment depths, and treatment areas may be used depending on the concern being treated. At Bio Aesthetic Laser Clinic, HIFU treatment planning may involve platforms such as Ultracel Q+, Dublo-S, and Sygmalift HIFU. Each platform has its own treatment characteristics, and the final cost depends on several practical factors.

  • Machine platform and treatment technology used
  • Treatment area and the number of shots required
  • Cartridges and consumables used during the session
  • Clinic and treatment setup

Different brands and treatment systems may also vary in maintenance costs, cartridge pricing, and treatment protocols. Because of this, HIFU prices in Singapore are not always directly comparable from one clinic to another.

A proper consultation is still important, as the most suitable HIFU plan depends on the treatment area, skin laxity, machine selected, and the overall treatment goals discussed with the doctor.

HIFU Side Effects

HIFU is generally associated with limited downtime, but some patients may notice temporary redness, tenderness, or mild swelling after treatment. The exact response can vary depending on the treatment area, skin sensitivity, and the intensity used.

  • temporary redness or warmth
  • mild swelling in selected areas
  • temporary tenderness or sensitivity
  • mild tingling or soreness after treatment

HIFU Aftercare Guide

After HIFU treatment, most patients can usually return to normal activities on the same day. It is still advisable to keep the skin protected and follow the doctor’s aftercare instructions carefully.

  • use sunscreen consistently
  • keep the treated area moisturised if advised
  • avoid unnecessary heat or harsh skin treatments for a short period
  • follow the recommended review or maintenance plan

How Does HIFU Compare with Other Face Tightening Treatments?

Different face-tightening treatments work at different depths and are chosen for different goals.

Comparison Point HIFU Laser RF IPL RF Microneedling
Main Depth Deeper support layers Surface to dermis Dermal heating Superficial light treatment Dermis via needles
Best For Skin laxity, lifting Texture, wrinkles, pigment Mild tightening support Pigment, redness, tone Texture, pores, tightening
Lifting Strength Deeper lifting support Less lifting-focused Milder lifting support Not lifting-focused Moderate tightening support
Downtime Usually limited Varies by laser Usually limited Usually limited Mild in many cases
Usually Chosen For Jawline, lower face Resurfacing concerns Collagen support Photoaging concerns Scars plus tightening

Why HIFU Is Often Chosen for Face Tightening

HIFU is often chosen when the main goal is deeper non-surgical lifting rather than surface resurfacing.

  • Deeper support for facial laxity
  • Commonly discussed for jawline and under-chin definition
  • Less resurfacing-focused than laser or IPL
  • Different role from RF microneedling, which is often chosen for texture and pores as well

The most suitable option still depends on whether the main concern is sagging, texture, acne scars, or pigmentation removal.

FAQ

FAQs about HIFU

How many treatments of HIFU is required?
The beauty of HIFU is it only requires one treatment, with regular maintenance every 6 months. For patients with more sagging, it would be recommended to undergo two initial treatments with half yearly maintenance.
We highly advise to avoid excessive sun exposure 1 week before the treatment. Skin care containing Rentin A or causes skin irritation should be refrained for at least 3 days.

Generally, visible results can already be seen on the first session. However, in order to see the full effect, it is advisable to wait 2 – 3 months. HIFU can be compared to going to the gym with your face.

When the ultrasound tightens under the skin layer, it will kick start the collagen production. it will progressively improve over the next 4 to 6 weeks as your skin continue to generate collagen. Results will differ between individuals as collagen production and maintenance is not the same.

The downtime for HIFU is very minimal. After the treatment, you may experience slight redness on treatment area and it will subside within the day. As the ultrasound beams does not directly penetrate the skin, there will not be any wounds or incision. You can resume normal activities and makeup can also be applied.
Although, pain tolerance differs between individuals, patients undergoing HIFU will experience some pain (2.5/5). Most patients can tolerate the discomfort and resume normal activities. At Bio Aesthetic Laser Clinic, we do have topical anaesthesia available to ease any discomfort and ensuring a seamless experience.

Typically, a full HIFU treatment (forehead – neck) will take 45 – 60 mins. For HIFU treatments targeting only specific areas (eye, cheeks, neck), it will take 30 mins.

Very simply explained, HIFU works like a gym tool for your face. Muscles will tone up when you visit the gym. The beams targeted at different layers of your face will cause the skin & muscles to stimulate and tighten. With constant maintenance, your face will start to tone up resulting in the lifting effect.
Unlike certain laser, there are no restrictions to skin colours as HIFU does not penetrate the skin surface. If you are experiencing saggy skin & wrinkles, HIFU can lift and firm up your overall face. It is also an excellent tool for age preventive. Many patients in the 30s start HIFU treatment to ensure constant collagen production. It can delay skin sagging and give you a V shaped face.

Compared to actual surgical facelift, HIFU can achieve very satisfactory results. However, if put into actual comparison, the results of surgical facelift is instant and proved effective. However it also comes with risks associated with surgery (Bleeding, hematoma, bruising. Infection. Neurological dysfunction).

While HIFU cannot completely replace surgical facelift, it provides an excellent non surgical alternative. More importantly, the results of HIFU provides a very natural lift (does not look like you have done surgery).

HIFU and laser uses different technology to penetrate the skin surface. Typically lasers utilizes light energy beams to penetrate up to a depth of 1.5mm. The laser beams can target superficial conditions such as fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, pigmentations and tattoos.
HIFU uses ultrasound beams to penetrate up to a depth of 4.5mm. Without breaking layers of the skin, the HIFU beams can bypass the skin to reach a precise depth. At a depth of 4.5mm, it targets the SMAS layer by sending thermal beams allowing the collagen production to kick start. As a result, fine lines and wrinkles will have an overall lifting effect.
As both treatments targets different layers of the skin, it is often used together to achieve an optimal skin lifting and rejuvenation effect.

Yes indeed HIFU is used in a number of areas other than face/skin tightening. It can be used to treat medical issues such as

  • Uterine fibroids
  • Glaucoma
  • Neurological tremors
  • Breast
  • Prostrate
  • Bone cancers

The HIFU technology has a long standing safety record and trusted by many doctors in the industry.

HIFU is suitable for all skin types and is an excellent option for patients looking to prevent early signs of aging. Areas such as :

  • Forehead
  • Eyebrow
  • Chin
  • Jowl line
  • Double chin /neck
  • Décolletage

can be targeted to reduce wrinkles and sagging.
